“Giving the best, trustworthy information and support is personally so important to me. I was diagnosed in 2016, before I began working at Coeliac UK. Back then I didn’t have a clue about coeliac disease or where to find factual information on social media channels.
I’d been working in the pharmacy retail sector and for a few years before my diagnosis, I felt just continually unwell and really fatigued – like I was 60 years old, when I was 27! I didn’t have any gastro symptoms. My nutritional deficiencies were my main symptoms. I was lacking in calcium, vitamin D and had to take iron tablets often.
My diagnosis was a big shock. It was all new and I’d say I felt a sense of grief for the old me. I needed to live life differently and my family and friends didn’t understand that I couldn’t join in our favourite takeaway or that an ordinary beer contained gluten.
Like many people who are newly diagnosed, and today’s generations who grow up in a digital world, I looked for support and information on social media and online communities. The information Coeliac UK posted on social media and some other advice was helpful, but it was troubling to see so much negativity and conflicting opinions around coeliac disease.
I don’t like misinformation, so as well as researching my new life-long medical condition, I studied for a new digital career. My dream social media job came up here at Coeliac UK and I’ve never looked back.
I’m sure you’ll agree, there’s still more that can be done to make the lives of gluten free people better. So, my hope is that by entering the Coeliac UK Spring Raffle, we can all play a part in continuing to change things for the better – and of course, you get the chance to win £5,000 too!
