Four CCGs in Staffordshire launch consultation on gluten free prescribing

Four Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in Staffordshire have launched a consultation on a proposal to restrict the prescription of gluten free foods to children and young people under 18 and to remove access to prescriptions for adults.

The four CCGs consulting on gluten free prescribing are Cannock Chase, East Staffordshire, South East Staffordshire and Seisdon Peninsula and Stafford and Surrounds CCGs.

We are concerned by the proposal and will share evidence with the CCG around the increased cost and limited availability of gluten free staple foods and their role in supporting management and adherence to the gluten free diet.

Research shows that gluten free staple foods are not readily available to purchase in budget supermarkets and convenience stores and that gluten free staple foods are 3-4 times more expensive than gluten containing equivalents.
