Join Coeliac UK’s campaign for more affordable and more accessible gluten free food. Our report ’The gluten free diet – how much does it cost and why does it matter?’ has emphasised the additional challenges faced by people with coeliac disease, particularly with the current cost of living crisis.

Our study revealed that people with coeliac disease are paying 7.2 times more for the cheapest loaf of gluten free bread when compared to the cheapest gluten containing loaf, weight for weight.

Our study also revealed that a gluten free weekly shop can be up to 20% more expensive than a standard shop.

Why does it matter?

A medically prescribed gluten free diet is the only current treatment for people diagnosed with coeliac disease, failure to adhere to the diet has significant consequences for health and wellbeing.

Complete replacement of gluten containing foods is not easy as wheat, barley and rye are the main ingredients of many staple foods which constitute a significant proportion of the average UK diet. Gluten free substitute foods are important for both practical reasons and for their nutritional contribution to the diet.

What are we doing to help?

We’re calling on policy makers and the food industry, to do more for people with coeliac disease to ensure they can both afford and access gluten free food to help maintain their health.
