Coeliac UK welcomes new South Yorkshire gluten free prescribing guidelines

We are delighted to note the recent decision by NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) to align its gluten free prescribing guidelines to the Coeliac UK England recommendations for all those with a diagnosis of coeliac disease across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

This not only protects provision of gluten free staple products across the ICB but crucially reinstates gluten free prescribing in Sheffield.

This means Sheffield residents with coeliac disease will once again be able to access gluten free bread and flour mix on prescription, a vital lifeline for those with the condition, particularly during the cost of living crisis.

We welcomed the opportunity to take part in a review of the prescribing policy as the ICB met with a range of stakeholders including Coeliac UK and healthcare professionals and drew on research into the cost of gluten free food and the role of staple products in the diet. An equality impact assessment was carried out and a report provided to the board. From this, the decision was taken to align its policy with Coeliac UK prescribing guidance, on health equality grounds

As a result, all those with a diagnosis of coeliac disease in South Yorkshire are entitled to gluten free bread and flour on prescription.
